Science (Double Award)

GCSE The Sciences (Double Award) is a new qualification that supports learners progression through the Curriculum for Wales. It allows learners to develop a strong foundation of knowledge, skills and understanding in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The qualification counts as two GCSEs and allows for progression to post-16 study, including AS and A Level Sciences.

At Ysgol Bro Dinefwr, we offer GCSE The Sciences through the medium of English and Welsh (as an option) and all three sciences are taught by subject specialists.

 

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The course has 7 units:

Unit 1: Biology Basis of Life 1 (14%)

Unit 2: Chemistry Chemical Substances and How They Behave (14%)

Unit 3: Physics Forces, Motion and the Universe (14%)

Unit 4: Biology Continuity of Life (16%)

Unit 5: Chemistry Chemical Bonding, Reactions and Resources (16%)

Unit 6: Physics Waves, Electricity and Energy (16%)

Unit 7: Scientific Enquiry (10%)

Units 1,2 and 3 will be examined at the end of Year 10 and Units 4,5 and 6 at the end of Year 11. The unit 7 practical component will be delivered in January of Year 11.

 

WHAT SKILLS WILL I DEVELOP?

Understand and explain concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics, and apply them to real- world contexts. Question scientific ideas, evaluate evidence, and use creative thinking to solve problems. Design, conduct, and refine investigations using a range of enquiry skills. Analyse and interpret data to draw valid conclusions. Use mathematical, digital, and communication skills to present and explain scientific ideas effectively. Consider moral, ethical, and sustainability issues in science and understand its impact locally and globally.
