WSRU National Plate Final – Principality Stadium

Ysgol Bro Dinefwr 28-15 Cwm Rhymni

Report by Tomas Marks (WRU Rugby Hub Officer)

Ysgol Bro Dinefwr reached the National Final of the WSRU Plate in the Principality Stadium beating a strong Cwm Rhymni team by 28 points to 15. On the way to the final the team beat Bryntawe, Gowerton, Dyffryn Taf and Olchfa. This was the first time in the school’s history that the 1st XV team reached a national final and they embraced the occasion by scoring 4 magnificent tries in a brilliant victory.

The team scored an early try in the opening minutes from a driving lineout with man of the match Ben Evans burrowing over the try line. After a positive start the team had to withstand a lot of pressure from Cwm Rhymni and the team defended heroically to trail by 7 points to 10 at half time. After a rallying call from the coaches at the interval the team grew in confidence and scored 3 tries in the second period.

The first try in second half was from centre Oliver Cleverly as he rounded the defence and scorched over from 35 metres. The next try was scored by number 8 Owen Hall as he gathered an exquisite offload from captain Gruff Thomas and dived jubilantly over the try line. The team had to wait until the final play of the match to score their final try and this was scored by towering Callan Davies as he finished an excellent team try. All four conversions were expertly converted by Oliver Weed.

For me as a coach this team truly demonstrates the importance of giving opportunity and more time for players to develop. Over half the squad did not represent the District or Scarlets in their lower years of school but they finish their school rugby careers as national winners and have left a lasting legacy at Ysgol Bro Dinefwr.

Rownd Derfynol Cenedlaethol Plât yr WSRU – Stadiwm y Principality

Ysgol Bro Dinefwr 28-15 Cwm Rhymni

Adroddiad gan Tomas Marks (Swyddog Canolfan Rygbi URC)

Cyrhaeddodd Ysgol Bro Dinefwr Rownd Derfynol Cenedlaethol Plât yr WSRU yn Stadiwm y Principality gan guro tîm cryf o ysgol Cwm Rhymni o 28 pwynt i 15. Ar eu ffordd i’r gêm derfynol roedd y tîm wedi trechu Bryntawe, Tre Gŵyr, Dyffryn Taf ac Olchfa. Dyma’r tro cyntaf yn hanes yr ysgol i’r tîm cyntaf gyrraedd rownd derfynol genedlaethol a chofleidion nhw’r achlysur trwy sgorio 4 cais gwych mewn buddugoliaeth ragorol.

Sgoriodd y tîm gais cynnar yn y munudau agoriadol o linell wthiol gyda seren y gêm, Ben Evans, yn turio dros y llinell gais. Wedi dechrau cadarnhaol bu’n rhaid i’r tîm wrthsefyll llawer o bwysau gan Gwm Rhymni ac amddiffynnodd y tîm yn wrol i fod ar ei hôl hi o 7 pwynt i 10 ar hanner amser. Yn sgil galwad i ‘r gad gan yr hyfforddwyr yn ystod yr egwyl magodd y tîm hyder a sgorion nhw 3 cais yn yr ail gyfnod.

Sgoriwr cais gyntaf yr ail hanner oedd y canolwr Oliver Cleverly wrth iddo gylchu’r amddiffyn a saethu drosodd o ryw 35 metr. Sgoriwyd y cais nesaf gan yr wythwr Owen Hall wedi iddo gasglu derbyniad gwych gan y capten Gruff Thomas gan blymio’n fuddugoliaethus dros y llinell gais. Bu’n rhaid i’r tîm aros hyd chwarae ola’r gêm i sgorio eu cais terfynol a sgoriwyd hwn gan y cawraidd Callan Davies wrth iddo orffen cais tîm ardderchog. Troswyd y pedwar trosiad yn fedrus gan Oliver Weed.

O’m safbwynt i fel hyfforddwr mae’r tîm hwn yn wir arddangos pwysigrwydd roi cyfle a mwy o amser i chwaraewyr ddatblygu. Nid oedd dros hanner y garfan wedi cynrychioli’r Ardal na’r Scarlets yn ystod eu blynyddoedd cyntaf yn yr ysgol ond maent yn gorffen eu gyrfaoedd rygbi ysgol fel enillwyr cenedlaethol ac maent wedi gadael etifeddiaeth barhaol yn Ysgol Bro Dinefwr.
