Chess Championship

On Monday 17 July, 36 pupils entered the first ever Ysgol Bro Dinefwr Under 14 Chess Championship.

Each player competed for 5 rounds in a league-style competition and matched opponents based on their position in the standings. The pupils had a wonderful time and learnt new skills, made new friends and enjoyed some friendly competition. The standard of play was exceptional, and it was clear that approximately 10 players were going to be competing for the title by the later rounds.

Going into the final round only two players had held on to a 100% record. Ioan Sharpe and Nathan Bates, who happen to be good friends. They battled it out in a tense but dramatic deciding game as Ioan missed a trap set by Nathan, who managed to complete an early check mate. Nathan finished with a perfect 5 wins from 5 games record to become our first Bro Dinefwr Chess Champion.

Nathan, Ioan and 13 others of our best performing players from the day will now go into a combined tournament with Dyffryn Aman on Thursday 20July, which pupils are very excited about.

Congratulations to all involved, and thanks to Mr Gareth Taylor and Mr Aled Davies for organising the championship. Good luck to everyone on Thursday!
