Engineering Wood and Metal

course information

This course is practical in nature but the completion of good quality folio work is essential   It is equivalent to 2 GCSEs A*-C.

To undertake the NVQ level 2 qualification we would ask that any potential candidate has an interest in engineering and enjoys practical engineering tasks. The course is predominantly practical based around metal and wood working activities and the candidates are expected to manually manufacture a number of different metal or wood tools/artefacts to a given standard to receive the NVQ qualification. The methods of manufacture differ between tasks and require specific skills that the candidate will learn as they progress on the course. The candidate is continually assessed as they carry out the practical elements and therefore there is no requirement to sit a final exam, although they must complete a written portfolio, logging information which includes how the candidate plans out and executes a given task. This is used as extra evidence to prove they have acquired the appropriate amount of skills and knowledge to receive the qualification. Candidates MUST be highly motivated and be able to work at a good pace because the course is entirely workshop based and a poor attendee will not produce enough work to fulfil the course requirements
